WoodFungi Conference

About WoodFungi

The People Behind the Conference

WoodFungi was born from a single conviction: that the specialty mushroom industry grows stronger when knowledge is shared openly.

Since the first edition in 2018, it has brought together growers, researchers, suppliers, and innovators from across the globe.

Welcome to WoodFungi:
Where Expertise Takes Root

My engagement with specialty mushrooms began as a childish fascination, and steadily developed into a dedicated professional pursuit. Over the years, I envisioned creating a conference devoted entirely to specialty mushrooms: a platform where growers, researchers, and fungophiles could connect within a dynamic, international network grounded in knowledge exchange and inspiration.

In 2008, this vision became reality. Close to 250 participants from across the globe attended the inaugural WoodFungi Conference, marking a milestone as the first event of its kind. What emerged was far more than a gathering: it evolved into a vibrant ecosystem of ideas, discoveries, and meaningful professional connections. Within the welcoming atmosphere of the Handelsbeurs concert hall in Ghent, we established a space where scientific inquiry met narrative insight, where expertise engaged with curiosity, and where innovation was given room to flourish.

The event proved to be a resounding success and set the stage for future editions. In June 2027, WoodFungi returns. Whether you are an experienced cultivator, an active researcher, or simply someone drawn to the remarkable world of fungi, you have come to the right place.

Welcome to a community rooted in knowledge, collaboration, and the subtle strength of mycelial networks.

Welcome to WoodFungi.

Founder, WoodFungi Conference

She lit the spark,
I help it burst into flame.

When my mother first launched the idea for WoodFungi, I thought she had gone mad. But as the plan unfolded, I began to feel the vibe too. The more people I talked to, the more I understood that there was a need for this type of conference. But nothing proved it to me as much as the conference itself.

Considering the worldwide growth of mushroom production and given China’s enormous boost to the industry, I came to understand that this is a sector in full development. In such a dynamic and changing industry, cooperation and sharing is key. And I embraced the idea that I too would become a messenger to the mushroom industry. Just like my mum.

De Bijloke:
A Venue With a Story to Tell

The WoodFungi Conference 2027 takes place at De Bijloke Music Centre, widely regarded as the oldest building in the world that permanently serves as a concert hall.

Built in the 13th century as a hospital ward, this beautifully preserved historic building sits on the edge of Ghent’s city centre and has been transformed into a modern venue with halls seating 20 to 830 people. Its majestic oak ceiling, centuries-old stone walls, and state-of-the-art acoustics make it a setting unlike any other, one where history and contemporary excellence meet.

A fitting backdrop for a conference that bridges tradition and innovation in the mushroom industry.
